Do-Overs and High Fives- the Twitter edition

by Liz on May 29, 2009

What in heaven’s name have I gotten myself into?

Or maybe I should ask, what in heaven’s name has Naomi gotten me into?

For the last few months as I’ve been working on building a coaching practice, I’ve been browsing the web and running into all kinds of cool (and a few not-so cool) people talking/writing/ teaching about how to build a small business.

Some of my faves are Mollie Gordon, chief hand-holder and encourager over at the Accidental Entepreneur; Havi Brooks, pirate queen of the SS Fluent Self, habits educator to helper mice everywhere;  and Naomi Dunford, pottymouthed marketing genious over at IttyBiz.  Naomi will kick your ass, but you won’t even notice because you’re laughing so damn hard.

Mollie says Twitter is great.   Havi says you’re an idiot if you’re not on Twitter.
well she doesn’t really- that’s not her style, but that’s the gist of it!
I wouldn’t exactly say I ignored them both… but I never made the move.

Maybe they softened me up- but Naomi made the kill.  Thanks to one of her ever so subtle “get off your ass” emails, I did it.  I took the plunge and signed up for a Twitter account.

She said it would take all of three minutes.  She lied- it took longer, but probably only because I was dithering over what my handle should be.
Do people still say ‘handle’?
There’s much to be said about the angst of naming oneself in such forums (fora for you intellectual types out there!)  But leave that aside for now because if I don’t move on, I’ll never get to the issue at hand.
It’s Friday so it must be time for Do-Overs and High Fives.  It was such a busy great week that there’s lots to share.
With no further ado
cause that was plenty of ado
Do-Overs:
Feeling Crummy
Probably because it was such a busy crazy weekend, I was running on fumes by the time Monday was over.  I woke up Tuesday with a sore throat and fuzzy head.  Whatever it was stuck with me until Thursday evening when I finally felt more or less normal.
Over-doing it?
I hate to give away the punch line- but when you read the high-fives, you’ll see what I mean.  Was it too much of a good thing?  Maybe- especially given item above.  But honestly, I’m not sure I would have done it much differently.  Is this a character flaw?  Not knowing when to say when?  I’m certain had my husband been home this weekend, things would have gone down differently.  He’s sometimes the voice of reason that talks me out of doing the thing that pushes me over the edge.
And sometimes I hate him for it!
Twitter Twerp?
Gotta say, this twitter thing is blowing my mind.  It’s even more of a rabbit hole than Facebook if such a thing is possible.  So many people, so many tweets, so many websites/blogs/etc. to visit.  If I didn’t start with ADD, I’d sure have it before long…
What was I doing, and where was I anyway and how did I get here, and what do you mean it’s time to cook dinner???
Then there’s the whole stepping out in public thing.  I didn’t mind so much when I thought the only people who might stumble onto this blog were folks I told via Facebook (or email once Naomi made me change my signature line!).

In any event, these are mostly people that aren’t complete strangers.
They might be plenty strange- just not strangers!

Now, out there in the twitterverse (god help the english language!), click on my name and here you are!
Yikes!  Who the hell are you people anyway!??!
If you’re cool- stick around- if not, well, you’re probably not still reading!
I’m all of a sudden very self conscious about my blogger blog… my DIY website, etc, etc…
And that’s not entirely a bad thing- but still….
Kira RIP
Can’t really put this in the category of Do-over, but it’s a sad one, so it goes here…  If you read last Friday’s post, you’ll recall that I was nursing a sick rat.  As it turns out, our efforts were for naught.  She died sometime friday night.  The high-five in here is that I was able to tell my son that we can be sure we did all we could for her.
So with that segue:
High Fives:

Chronologically:

Saturday- Performance at Boulder Creek Festival

A.J. and his fellow violinists did a great job performing at the Boulder Creek Festival saturday morning.  Then we hung out and visited the booths, ate fair food (I had the best pupusas!  Hadn’t had those since we moved from VA.)  rode a few rides (him not me!) and got home before the rain hit.  Score on all counts!

Laying low on Sunday
In preparation for the big day Monday, we hung around the house.  Did a few low key errands and not much else.

A.J. ROCKS the Bolder Boulder

Just a bit of background- the Bolder Boulder is the largest 10K (6.2 mile) race in the world(?)  There are between 40,000 and 50,000 people running/jogging/walking this thing every year.

And it’s a wicked good street party along the way.  There are bands every half mile or so, sprinklers, hoses and slip-n-slides, people handing out everything from water, fruit, and beer, to  bacon and cupcakes (no kidding) …. It’s a good time.

This is the third year A.J. has entered the race and for the first time, he RAN the whole thing.  For an hour and 17 minutes- he ran, except while drinking.  This was impressive because in our (limited) training, we were doing a combo of run/walk.  I was so proud of him- he had no idea he could do it.

And then… because running a road race wasn’t enough for one day, we went back to the Boulder Creek Festival to hear our favorite band- FACE.  Vocal rock.  Kicks #%

Then home to crash and await Daddy’s return.

Birthdays RULE!

Tuesday was my big sweetie’s birthday, and even though he did have to make his own dinner because I was crashed- it was a good time.  Fortunately I’d gotten the cake made on Monday (amid all the other insanity).

I’m more motivated than ever

To grow my coaching practice.  I spent the afternoon covering for our school’s beloved Office Manager (the guy who really runs the place!) as part of the PTO’s gift to him.  It was a flashback to my days working as a temp while I was in grad school.  Even though I love the school, love the people who work there (and who I work with on many different things), it was a stark reminder of why I NEVER want to work in an office again.  My brain simply doesn’t function well in that environment or under those conditions.

And last but not least-

I’m all a Twitter…
Still curious about how all this is going to go- but thanks to Naomi who told her followers to say hi, I have followers…  and they’re not creepy like I was afraid they’d be.  In fact, they’re really cool people who seem to know (in the twitter sense of ‘know’) other cool people.

In fact I found Patti Digh whose book “37 Days” is sitting on my nightstand right this minute.  How cool is that?  I guess maybe I kinda sorta get why people think this is the greatest thing since peanut butter.

And it’s made me step up my game just a bit- I had to clean up a few things on my website- and realized there’s much more work there to do…
Maybe this weekend?
OK folks- that’s all for me this week- it was a busy one for sure.

How about you?

Got a Do-Over you want to share?  A High Five you want credit for?
